Champ Hockey's mission is to help young athletes realize their dream of developing their field hockey skills and knowledge of the game of field hockey, while advancing their field hockey career - ultimately with the goal of becoming a collegiate student-athlete if desired. Our coaching focus is to use a fast-paced and high-intensity training atmosphere to build a fundamental skill base and increase each players' knowledge of the game. Focusing on passing ability, individual stickwork, individual defense, set plays, team build up, and team defense will all be covered in the training sessions.
Club members must have a high work ethic, combined with a willingness to learn, and a commitment to a team-oriented style of play. The focus of high quality basic skills, individual and passing fundamentals, combined with advanced skills will lend itself to develop a team style.
Coach and Champ Hockey owner, Robin Merritt, has a decade of collegiate coaching experience at the division I level as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Vermont. She is also a coach within the USA Field Hockey Futures program, serving as the Head Coach of the Vermont Futures site for the past ten years. She has coached at many National Futures Championship tournaments and been a regional selector for the National Futures Championship.
Merritt's playing career consisted of multiple Junior Olympic selections, National Futures Championship appearances, a two-time member of the USA Under 16 national team, an alternate to the USA Under 21 Junior World Cup team, and ultimately a four-year field hockey student-athlete at Duke University earning All-ACC Tournament honors.
Club members will have opportunities to tryout for specific tournament play and must fall within the age parameters of given tournaments. This commitment will consist of travel within New England and will be based upon the availability of club members. The tournament travel team may require a tryout situation depending on the roster limitations of each tournament. Selection will be based upon a combination of commitment to the trainings, skill level, and positional needs for a given event.
